I am a registered psychotherapist (PBANZ) in New Plymouth with 25 years in private practice working with individuals, couples and families.

I like to work with people in transitions or life crises of some kind – an existential or spiritual crisis, or a marriage crisis.

I also feel privileged in working more long term with people suffering the effects of childhood trauma, neglect and attachment difficulties. I have helped people suffering with depression, anxiety, grief and PTSD.

I have worked for Supporting Families in Mental Illness so I understand the difficulties of mental pain from the point of view of the designated patient and the strain on their family.

There is no good reason why we should not develop and change until the last day we live.”
— Kate Horney, 1945

I am the President of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists Council (NZAP) and a published writer on psychotherapy. I hold an Advanced Certificate of Practice with NZAP, and write short articles and press statements on behalf of NZAP, advocating for access to psychotherapy, social justice, peace and rights of children etc. You can read some of these works here.

I trained in the holistic psycho-spiritual modality of Psychosynthesis, and specialised in trauma work when I graduated. Since then I have read and trained in aspects of Psychoanalysis, Attachment Theory and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

I like to get to know you and work to understand how the relationship between us is working rather than apply tests and theories to you. I believe that psychological theories need to be held lightly in the background of my mind as I sit with you and give you my attention. At times people bring particular issues they want to explore and other times people have no idea why they need to see me but are open to a prompt from their Unconscious and want to become more self-aware.

A first meeting usually clarifies whether someone needs a short intervention for a particular issue or a longer therapeutic relationship to create significant and long lasting change.
